Vollgeläut

Neue Berliner Räume

Berlin & Lesbos

At the height of refugee-related discussions in 2016, this project combines two seemingly disconnected locations: Schöneberg Town Hall in Berlin, and the bells of Mytilene Cathedral on Lesbos.

“Vollgeläut” is a term denoting the joint ringing of all bells of a church or another institution – often to mark exceptional occasions or otherwise distinct days of the year.

May this world experience a rebirth of freedom. (Inscription on Berlin’s Freedom Bell)

On March 29th 2016 at 12:00 midday, Berlin’s Freedom Bell was ringing in the town hall of Schöneberg. Jointly, the bells were tolling on Lesbos in the tower of Mytilene Cathedral. Two cities set so far apart. And yet the same.
